California Floaters Society (CFS) is an online networking club for getting on the river. This is achieved using the RiverTrips list server to communicate with one another. The RiverTrips list server promotes community among CFS members, who use it for expediting and organizing river trips, trading and selling river gear, telling tall river tales, reporting river news, events, and river hazards.
CFS is totally noncommercial and is not a guide service – All trips organized by CFS members are strictly shared cost, cooperative recreational activities, and each individual participating in those activities is responsible for deciding when, where, and with whom to boat.
The CFS Philosophy
CFS embraces the philosophy of community in all river users and in the cause of advancing river access, ecology, preservation, and having fun. We promote shared knowledge, adventure and elevated safety and river rescue awareness.
A Brief History
CFS was conceived by David Delfiner of Outdoors Unlimited at UC San Francisco in August 1994. In the beginning membership in CFS required yearly dues, we had monthly meetings, a monthly newsletter and a telephone hotline for for 200 or so members to arrange last minute river trips, and much more. A few years ago, due to volunteer burn out, CFS stopped all the above and became an online networking club with no dues, no newsletter, and no official meetings. Membership has since doubled and continues to climb...
